Carter's Department Store

This is a calendar, from 1911, from Carter's Department Store. It was never used, so all of the little calendar pages are still intact; amazing after all of these years. The image on the calendar is of "Mount Baker, as seen from Friday Harbor."

Cascade Falls Postcard

Here's an interesting postcard, addressed to my great-grandma, in 1914. It reads, "Dear Ada, Your class is going down to Newhall's Lagoon this (Wednesday afternoon). Be at O.H. Culvers with your lunch at 4 P.M. F. Mullis." I darkened the back of the postcard so that it would be easier to read. It's interesting to think about the days before email, cell phones, and other quick means of communication, and how sending a postcard might be the fastest way of getting news to someone...even in your own town!

Some additional things of interest; O.H. Culvers established the port at Friday Harbor, and F. Mullis is presumably Frank Mullis, renowned island builder and contractor.

San Juan Co. Deputy Sheriff Badge

One of the many interesting items we found, when searching through my family belongings, was this deputy sheriff's badge. It reads, "Deputy Sheriff San Juan Co. WASH." on the front, and "CD Reese 57 Warren St. NY" on the back. I brought it in to be photographed for the San Juan Island Heritage Project, and this is the image they took.  If you haven't visited the San Juan Island Heritage site, do check it out; it's fascinating!

Victoria-Anacortes Ferry

This is a photo of two boats docked at Friday Harbor; the steam powered Victoria-Anacortes ferry, called the City of Angeles, and the Speeder.

Adah Beeny

This is Adah Beeny, who was 85 years old when this photo was taken in 1953. Adah took care of the children from the illustrious McMillin family of Roche Harbor. My family has one of her books in our collection; I assume that she loaned, or gave, it to my Great-Grandma Adah, who worked at Hotel de Haro.

Keep Your Ducks Off My Land...

What do you do when someone's ducks won't stay off your land? Send them a postcard warning them to keep them off! I guess that's what one Friday Harbor community member decided to do, when my Great-Great-Grandpa Henry's ducks wouldn't stay off their land.

The postcard reads,"Do as you want other people to do. I write to give you warning to at once keep your ducks off my land." It is postmarked May 4, 1910. Times sure have changed, communication wise.

Captain Harry Barlow

This is an image of Captain Harry Barlow, brother of the well known Captain Sam Barlow. Harry invented the Barlow Marine Elevator (a.k.a. the Barlow Elevator or Barlow Steam Elevator) in 1909, which aided in the loading and unloading of freight from boats.
